Seven ways a company moves
Every entry in the ledger is tagged with one positioning move. These are the 7 that have shown up so far. The taxonomy grows only when a case refuses to fit.
Category escape
5 entriesLeaving a category you can win for one with a bigger budget behind it.
- Qualified HealthA category is only as good as the budget it comes out of. Owning a small category completely is worse than fighting for a piece of a large one.
- VizcomAn integration buys you your partner's distribution, not your partner's problem, and only one of those is a business.
- WarpRepositioning upward changes who you sell to. It does not change who finds you. The old promise is what still fills the top of the funnel, so take it off the homepage and the new promise ends up talking to an empty room about two quarters later.
- CrosbyWhen your category name is a promise about liability, your legal pages become positioning pages. The second your fine print contradicts your homepage, you don't have a category. You have a claim someone can screenshot.
- Assort HealthYou don't get to file yourself. Your new category is real the day somebody who doesn't work for you uses the noun.
Deliberate hedge
4 entriesClaiming ground you can hold while leaving the harder claim unmade.
- ArcadeOwn the claim your biggest competitor is structurally unable to make. If they can run your headline, it isn't a headline, it's a category description.
- GreptileUsage pricing is two decisions, not one: what you meter, and whether the allowance pools. Ship the first without the second and you haven't built a meter, you've built a fine for having one heavy user.
- Chai DiscoveryOpen source buys you a fixed amount of credibility. It does not refill by itself, and you start spending it the day you stop shipping.
- Black Forest LabsA promise with no date doesn't get argued with. It gets quietly replaced.
Category creation
3 entriesNaming a new box and getting the market to file you in it.
- GridCARENever name your category after a bottleneck. Name it after the thing that survives the fix.
- FactoryA new category name makes buyers learn something. An old one makes them remember something. Learning takes three years you don't have, so go find the word that's already sitting in their budget and claim you're the version that finally works.
- CodeRabbitA category launch is a receipt, not a bet. If the people who have to sell the new story weren't hired two quarters ago, you didn't launch a category. You published a wish.
Layer-down wedge
3 entriesMoving underneath the competition to own the layer everything else sits on.
- OllamaA distribution loop is not a moat. It is a head start with compounding interest, and the interest stops the moment someone can replace you by changing one line of config.
- ComfyUIYou cannot govern a community you do not pay, so ship the tool they need and put the rules inside it, because the only rules that stick are the ones that arrive as a feature.
- Atomic CanyonGive the whole industry the layer built on data they already share, and charge for the layer built on the data only one customer has.
Scoreboard reframe
2 entriesChanging which number the market grades everyone on.
Anti-positioning
2 entriesDefining yourself by the thing you refuse to do.
- VapiRefusing margin on part of the bill buys you credibility, and credibility does not invoice, so make sure the sliver you kept still grows when your customer wins.
- DessnOwn the one word your competitors can't put in their headline. Then check that it's the word your product is best at, not the one it's worst at.
Unit invention
1 entryInventing the thing you charge for, and living with what it grows against.
